In early November LMP welcomed Alex Potts a very talented young guitarist from Southern California who wanted to make an audition tape for several major music conservatory programs in the U.S. After deciding to apply to the Eastman, Julliard and the New England Conservatory music programs, young Mr. Potts prepared several pieces to fulfill the audition requirements and asked some friends to play in his rhythm section for the recording.
Of course this is where it became fun! Virtually every professional musician in Los Angeles knows Alex’s father – Leo Potts. Leo, a superb musical artist, is one of LA’s most respected and finest virtuoso saxophonists.
So Alex was lucky to have a Dad who not only understood his musical career desires, but also happened to have some friends who volunteered to play for Alex’s “Conservatory Sessions”.
It just happens that the three players were Tom Ranier, Luther Hughes and Paul Kreibich. You will find all three running from studio to studio as some of LA’s finest professional recording artists.
These musical pro’s most of you would recognize from their work in various genres like the Academy Awards or Grammys or Emmys or American Idol or from every major jazz, pop and classical record label releases in the last decade….well you get the idea.
Alex had the “mother lode” of rhythm players working with him on this session – and his teacher Stu Goodis even took time from his busy schedule to join in making the session the best it could be.
In less than two hours a wonderfully fun, vibrant, and very musical audition tape was recorded “live”. At the end of the session, Alex requested everyone join in and “jam” on “Alice in Wonderland” - and what ensued was a delightful and inspiring performance by all.
It was a day of memories for a lifetime for a son and his father – Alex and Leo – and a day of great enrichment for all of us! LMP was honored to be a part of this project.
A generation of the finest professional artists in the world took time to share their skills in order to bring opportunity to the next generation of young artists. It was fun to see Alex rise to the occasion – he played beautifully!
We expect to see Alex back in about 2008 to do his first professional CD! Congratulations to Alex, Leo, Tom, Luther, Paul and Stu!
